McCall becomes Rear Admiral in Navy

WASHINGTON – With only 2% of all naval officers making flag rank, Cherokee Nation citizen Wesley McCall recently made rank as rear admiral (lower half) in the U.S. Navy after 31 years of service. “It’s a big honor for me to be honest with you,” McCall said. “It’s a big shock. But it’s just, I guess, it’s just a testament to all the hard work that you put in. You’ve learned along the way and I guess that the Navy has noticed that and that’s based on what all these flag officers have to offer.” Growing up in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and graduating high school in 1986, McCall said the interest to enter the armed services came from his father.

Mary Kom, 2 Others Enter Semis in Boxam Internatinal in Spain

MC Mary Kom (51kg) has entered the semi-final at the Boxam International Tournament in Castellon, Spain on Wednesday. This means she is not assured of a medal. She defeated Italian Giordana Sorrentino with a split verdict in the quarter-final of the event. This marks a victory in her very first competitive outing since qualifying for the Olympics last year. Next up for the six-time world champion is American Virginia Fuchs as she builds up to her second Olympic appearance in Tokyo later this year. It was a watchful start by the experienced Manipuri boxer as she took her time to get a measure of her aggressive opponent. Both the boxers adopted a cautious approach, preferring to play in defence through the opening round, for the most part.
